What is Noninvasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)?
NIPT is as safe as a simple blood draw and is an accurate chromosomal screening test.
- NIPT is also known as cell-free DNA screening (cfDNA).
- It is a simple blood test that analyzes small fragments of DNA from the pregnancy that circulate in the pregnant woman's blood.
- NIPT commonly screens for trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), trisomy 18, and trisomy 13, and may also screen for certain sex chromosomal differences.
- Compared with traditional screening tests, NIPT is more accurate at estimating risk for these conditions.
- NIPT can be performed as early as 9-10 weeks of pregnancy.
- Some NIPT options include screening for other conditions, including microdeletions and copy number variants.
- NIPT can be performed in twin pregnancies.
